A one-way door is a simple device that lets a possum leave the roof but stops it from getting back inside. It suits the way possums live: most leave the roof after dark to feed, and the door simply stops them returning.
First, the crew inspects the roof and finds the main entry point, the one the possum uses every night. All the other gaps are sealed so there is only one way out. The one-way door is then fitted over that main gap. It is usually a mesh tunnel with a flap at the end that swings outward only, so the possum can push its way out but cannot push back in.
The door is left in place for a few nights. Once the crew can see the roof is empty, they take the door off and seal the final opening. Timing matters here. In the breeding season there may be a young possum in the nest, so the crew checks the roof space before closing up. The crew will tell you when they plan to come back and what signs to listen for in the meantime.
