Possums are good climbers, but they still prefer an easy path. A branch that rests on the gutter or hangs over the roof is like a bridge straight to the tiles. In North Lakes, many homes have gum trees, palms and fruit trees planted close to the house, and those branches are often how a possum reaches the roof in the first place. Mango trees and other fruit trees are a common pull for possums in backyards here.
The crew we book looks at which branches give possums a route onto the roof and cuts them back to leave a clear gap between the tree and the roof line. The usual aim is around a metre or more, so a possum cannot jump across. They trim small and medium branches from a ladder or the roof and clear the cuttings away.
Branch trimming works together with sealing. On its own, it will not stop a possum that is already living in the roof, and a determined possum may still climb a downpipe or fence. It does make the roof much harder to reach, and it cuts down on leaves filling the gutters too. Large trees or trees near power lines need an arborist, and the crew will tell you if that is the case.
